Facebook has been the object for scrutiny for several months now. Due to the users’ data leakage a lot of people have turned their backs on Facebook and radically changed their opinion as the alleged leakage had everything to do with Russian meddling in American elections in 2016. Ever since the scandal broke out officials were waiting for Zuckerberg’s apology and explanation. And yesterday it happened.
Zuckerberg gave an official statement before the American senate yesterday saying that the main priority of Facebook as well as the other programs related with Facebook is giving people the possibility to communicate only with those who they want to communicate with. He also admitted that the leakage and breach of security was his fault and he was sorry, although the senators didn’t really buy the sincerity of the apology.
From now on the self-regulation of Facebook is hanging by a thread. Senator John Kennedy said: "Your user agreement sucks. I don’t want to vote to have to regulate Facebook, but by God I will. A lot of that depends on you." – addressing Zuckerberg’s statement. In his turn the CEO said that the real question is not Facebook’s regulation, but the regulation of the Internet as a whole, as the popularity and importance of it is growing in people’s lives.
Officials, representing Facebook have stated that the measured improving the security systems if the social network have already been taken and more are on the way. Such as the searchable archine for federal elections.
