Over the weekend one of the biggest digital exchanges in Japan became the target for hackers’ heist.
Coincheck has announced that unknown hackers have stolen cryptos for a total cost of $534 million. After this the exchange has stopped all the transactions with all the cryptos except Bitcoins. The estimated loss is named in NEM cryptocurrency.
It is reported that the stolen assets were being saved in the “hot wallet” which is connected to the Internet and is always online. That is its main difference from the “cold wallet”. After the heist was confirmed it was named the biggest crypto steal of all time
Hackers attacked the exchange on Friday and the officials have only learned about it about nine hours later. At the time of the attack the estimated value of crypto that is gone was worth 58 billion yen.
The CEO of the exchange Yusuke Otsuka has stated that the digital address of those who stole the assets is known to the officials and that they are trying to discuss the possibility of the return of the NEM coins.
The accident has influenced NEM’s value – it is 10th biggest crypto in the market and in the last two days its value has fallen by more than 11% to the point of #0.87.
